How to prepare for your tattoo

A practical design and consultation checklist.

The more clearly you describe your idea, the easier it is to discuss feasibility, time and price. You do not need a finalized design before reaching out.

Describe your idea in five details

Share the motif or theme, style, approximate size in centimetres, placement and your available dates. Add a few reference pictures you have permission to use and explain what you like or dislike. Reference material is a starting point, not necessarily something to copy.

Talk realistically about size and placement

The same artwork reads differently on the forearm, shoulder or back. Skin contours, movement and viewing distance affect readability. Ask whether elaborate shading requires a larger area.

Questions before committing

  • Does the artist actually work in your chosen style?
  • Can you see authentic, healed work by that artist?
  • How is the quote calculated and how long might the session take?
  • What hygiene and aftercare information will you receive?
  • What happens with rescheduling, deposits or touch-ups?

On appointment day

Allow enough time and do not arrive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Discuss medication, relevant conditions, allergies or wound-healing concerns with a qualified clinician and the studio when appropriate. Approve the final placement and size only when you are comfortable.

A WhatsApp inquiry is not a reservation until the studio confirms the appointment.

In-depth guidance and practical examples

Explore the subject in depth with realistic examples, decisions to make and important limitations.

Clarify your idea

Write a short explanation of the motif and the feeling it should convey. Choose references for composition, shading and style rather than requesting an exact copy of someone else’s tattoo. Identify essential details and elements you definitely do not want.

Size and placement

Give approximate dimensions in centimetres and a photo of the body area in a normal position. Tiny designs cannot always preserve intricate details. Ask how movement, visibility, friction and the available space affect the proposal.

Discuss scope and cost

Clarify the design process, revisions, estimated sessions, appointment confirmation and any payment conditions. Price can vary with detail, size, placement and time; request an individual estimate instead of assuming a universal rate.

Health and aftercare

Ask about hygiene and obtain written aftercare instructions. Seek appropriate medical advice for relevant allergies, skin conditions or other medical concerns. If you are on holiday, make sure swimming and strong sun exposure do not conflict with the healing plan.

Your appointment checklist

Bring a description, references, intended area, size and several dates. Review the final design and its orientation before the procedure. Save the care instructions and contact information, and seek medical help if worrying symptoms occur.
